Madison Shipman hit a two-run homer to center and Melissa Davin had an RBI double off the wall in left to help lead No. 2 Tennessee to a 3-1 win over San Diego State late Thursday night in the San Diego Classic.

Tennessee (15-1) scored two in the third inning and one run in the sixth. San Diego State (11-6) scored one run in the bottom of the fifth.

UT starter Ellen Renfroe (9-0) tossed seven strong, striking out six and allowing one unearned run.

Shipman went 2-for-3 with the two-run shot. She has been on a tear lately, hitting five home runs in UT’s last four games.

San Diego State ace Danielle O’Toole (10-3) took the loss after allowing three earned runs over seven innings. O’Toole held UT, which came into the weekend with a .348 average and 15 home runs, hitless until the top of the third inning when Megan Geer hit a one-out single and Madison Shipman followed with a homer on a 3-0 pitch. It was the only two hits allowed by O’Toole until the sixth, when Tennessee pounded out four more hits. San Diego State, however, got two runners out on base and only gave up one run in the inning.

After leaving two runners stranded in the second inning, UT broke through in the third. With one out, Megan Geer singled through the right side. Shipman then sent a 3-0 pitch from O’Toole deep over the fence in straightaway center field to give UT a 2-0 lead.

San Diego State got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth. With two runners on and no outs, Katie Mathis ripped an RBI single to center field to draw the Aztecs to within 2-1.

In the top of the sixth, Davin came through with a big hit to push UT’s lead back to two runs. With pinch runner Jennifer Burroughs on third base and two outs, Davin knocked an RBI double off the wall in left center.

Tennessee will continue play in the San Diego Classic on Friday, Feb. 28, at 11:30 a.m. PT/2:30 p.m. ET against Colorado State. The game will be played at the University of San Diego.
