Junior Jessica Roper was slated as the Tennessee Sports Writers Association Player of the Week on Tuesday after leading the Cumberland softball squad to a 5-1 week to close out the regular season.
The Bellflower, Calif., native batted .471 in six games during the week, collecting eight hits on 17 at-bats. Roper knocked in six runs, scored five times, had a pair of doubles and a home run.
Roper was 1-for-3 with a double in a 3-2 victory over St. Catharine College and followed that performance with three runs scored and a pair of RBIs in game two, a 13-3 Cumberland win.
On Friday, Roper began a stretch of four straight games behind the plate in two days. She collected a hit and an RBI in a 12-8 win over Shawnee State. The junior erupted on Saturday versus the University of Rio Grande, combining to go 5-for-5 in a doubleheader, with two RBIs, two runs scored, a double and a homer.
For the season Roper leads the Bulldogs with a .451 batting average as well as 19 walks and has posted 11 doubles, five homers and 44 RBIs with 39 runs scored in 52 contests.
CU opens play in the Mid-South Conference Championships on Thursday versus No. 4-seeded Rio Grande. Cumberland will act as the No. 5 seed in the three-day, double-elimination tournament which concludes on Saturday. CU and URG square off in the opening round at 9:30 a.m. CT.
