Vandy scores 19 runs in blowout win over MTSU

The Blue Raiders (18-19) gave up three big innings to the Commodores (28-10). VU added four in the first, four in the fourth and 10 in the sixth. The Raiders notched a run on four hits with an error, while Vandy scored 19 runs on 17 hits. Vanderbilt put together seven extra-base hits, while drawing 11 walks.

Senior Hank LaRue drew a pair of walks and Jared Allen scored a run off one hit in the loss. Allen posted his team-leading third triple of the season in the first. Designated hitter Jake Ingold recorded his 25th RBI of the year.

Eight different pitchers saw action on Tuesday. Right-hander Kooper Kessler (1-1) took the loss, giving up four runs on four hits with two walks and a strikeout in two frames thrown. Cody Tollison tossed two hitless innings with three strikeouts. Vanderbilt’s Walker Buehler (7-1) won the game with just a run allowed on three hits in 5.1 innings pitched.

In the first, VU jumped out to a four-run lead. Dansby Swanson and Bryan Reynolds scored VU’s first two runs off a pair of wild pitches. The Commodores then roped a pair of back-to-back triples to take a 4-0 lead.

Allen notched his third triple of the year to open the second inning for the Raiders. The junior would score from a RBI groundout by Ingold to cut MT’s deficit to three. MT loaded the bases in the third, but were lefty empty handed.

The Dores added four more runs in the fourth, three from a walk and two from hit batsmen. In the sixth, VU scored 10 runs off eight hits in the sixth to take a 19-1 lead.

Middle Tennessee visits East Carolina for a three-game Conference USA series beginning on Thursday. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. CT in Greenville on Thursday and Friday. Saturday’s weekend finale is set for 11 a.m. CT.
