Smart Signs With Mariners

Tennessee’s Taylor Smart signed with the Seattle Mariners organization and made his professional debut on Friday night with the Everett AquaSox of the Northwest League.

The native of Maple Valley, Washington, Smart was drafted in the 26th round by his homestate Mariners on June 7.

He signed his contract with Seattle on Wednesday and started his pro career on Friday night. Smart came on as a pinch runner in the seventh inning for the AquaSox and scored a run as Everett beat Hillsboro, 4-3.

Smart played two seasons with the Vols after transferring in from Western Nevada College. In his two seasons in Orange & White, Smart played in 102 games with 98 starts. He started mostly at third base as a senior in 2014 after playing second base, third and shortstop in 2013.

As a senior, Smart had 16 multi-hit gams on his way to a .292 batting average with a .396 on-base percentage. Smart started 52 of 53 games he played in 2014 and smacked four homers and drive in 29 runs. He had 54 hits and nine doubles. On the base paths, he had eight stolen bases in 13 attempts.

He earned the team’s top defensive player award in 2014 with many dynamic plays at third base.

Prior to Tennessee, he helped Western Nevada to the JUCO World Series in 2012. He topped the team with 53 runs scored while posting a .407 on-base percentage with 34 RBI and 12 stolen bases during his sophomore campaign. He claimed 2012 second team all-region honors.
