Vols lose Lopez add another walkon, Braxton Bonds

Posted on 29 July 2014 by Allen

It’s been a crazy few days for the Tennessee Vols basketball program. On Saturday Brandon Lopez, a walk-on Senior injured his right ACL in a pick up game and was ruled out for the 2014-15 season. Then there began to be rumblings on Sunday that Braxton Bonds would be walking on to the team. Later that night there were reports that he was listed in the student directory.

Bonds is the nephew of Barry Bonds and had previously committed to Liberty University. He is a three star point guard from CPA in Nashville who signed his National Letter of Intent in November. But now he is no longer with Liberty as the school confirmed they did give him his release earlier in the week.

It makes sense that once the coaching staff learned of Lopez’s injury it opened up a walk-on spot for Bonds. It’s a shame that Lopez was injured as he was coming into his Senior year. He had appeared in over 30 games in the last three years. It could be a blessing in disguise for the Donnie Tyndall as Bonds was teamates with highly regarded prospect Braxton Blackwell at CPA.
