Bulldogs climb in polls

Cumberland moved up four spots to No. 14 in this week’s NAIA Football Coaches’ Top 25 Poll, the national office announced Monday, after a 59-28 victory at Bluefield College.

The Bulldogs racked up 688 yards of total offense in the contest and scored on its first nine drives of the contest, including six touchdowns in the first half. Reed Gurchiek completed 13-of-15 passes for 215 yards and two touchdowns and Broc Loveless was 4-for-5 throwing for 54 yards and another score.

Gurchiek also paced Cumberland on the ground, gaining 89 yards on eight carries and one TD. Blake DeBoard added 78 yards on 15 carries, Kentavious Eberhart scored on a 49-yard run and Brandon Mallory posted a pair of rushing touchdowns from two and 13 yards out. The Bulldogs gained 450 yards on the ground of 55 attempts.

Cumberland continued its ascent up the Top 25 poll, starting the preseason at No. 25 before moving to 21st in the first regular season poll and then No. 18 last week. The Bulldogs, 3-1 overall with their only loss to NCAA FCS member UT Martin, continue their current four-game road swing this week at the University of Pikeville on Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
