In honor of those who serve our country by wearing the uniform, The University of Tennessee has designated this Saturday’s game at Neyland Stadium against Arkansas State as the Military Appreciation Game for 2014. A variety of events, as well a military-themed halftime show, are planned around the game.

At halftime, the Pride of the Southland Band will pay tribute to the military with their performance, one that will be accompanied by country music icon Lee Greenwood. The performance will also pay tribute to several Medal of Honor recipients attending the game, all of whom will be attending The 2014 Medal of Honor Convention, held in Knoxville from Sept. 10-13.

Also at halftime, the Military Order of the Purple Heart, Department of Tennessee, is naming the University of Tennessee as a Purple Heart-designated University because of its commitment to veterans and the military as well for its consistent support of combat-wounded veterans. UT is the first school in the state of Tennessee to receive this designation and only the sixth nationally. Major Gen. Max Haston, Adjutant General for the state of Tennessee, will be a part of the presentation, in which Robert Hunt, State Commander of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, will present the designation to UT Knoxville Chancellor Jimmy G. Cheek.

Several members of the Wounded Warriors Project will also attend Saturday’s game.

Fans will also have the opportunity to express their appreciation for our country’s men and women in uniform by signing and writing messages of appreciation on an 8 foot-by-20 foot banner that reads “Thank You Military” and includes the five logos of the branches of the military. The banner will be set up outside Gate 21 at Neyland Stadium.

Saturday’s game between Tennessee and Arkansas State is slated for a 12:01 p.m. kickoff.
