Vanderbilt announced a football series with Northern Illinois in 2019 and 2022. The Huskies will come to Nashville on Sept. 27, 2019. The Dores will return the favor and head to Northern Illinois on Sept. 17, 2022.
According to NIU Associate Vice-President and Director of Athletics Sean T. Frazier;
“This is a series that all Huskie fans can get excited about,” Frazier said. “With the addition of Vanderbilt in 2022, NIU fans will see teams from the SEC, the Big Ten, the ACC and the Pac-12, as well as the American and Mountain West, in Huskie Stadium beginning as soon as next season. I’m happy with what we’ve been able to do with the football schedule, but I’m not satisfied. It is a work in progress and the job is never complete as far as I’m concerned.”
Vanderbilt and Northern Illinois have had some fun games in the past. The Commodore lead the series 3-0 but had a scare in 1999 when the Huskies dominated the Dores until late in the 4th quarter when Jimmy Williams returned a punt for a touchdown to give Vandy the win. Northern Illinois had led by 25 until Greg Zolman came alive in the second half. Former Titan receiver Justin McCareins had two touchdowns for the Huskies.
In addition to Northern Illinois Vandy will also host LSU from the SEC West in 2019. The Dores will play their regular SEC East foes, (South Carolina, Kentucky, Georgia, Tennessee, Missouri, and Florida) in addition to their permanent SEC West rival Ole Miss. No other games are known just yet.
