continued its move up the national rankings on Monday, coming in at 12th in the NAIA Football Coaches’ Top 25 Poll, the national office announced. The Bulldogs moved up two more spots after an overtime victory at the University of Pikeville.

Cumberland started the season ranked No. 25 nationally and has incrementally moved up over the last month, from 25 to 21 to 18 to 14 and now 12. The Bulldogs have won three straight contests, the last two on the road.

CU overcame a 17-point second-half deficit in Saturday’s victory at Pikeville and scored twice in the fourth quarter, including a 54-yard interception return for a TD by Anthony Knight and Blake DeBoard’s one-yard run with 30 seconds remaining. The Bulldogs converted two-point conversions on both touchdowns in the final period, forcing overtime, and after Pikeville missed a 37-yard field goal attempt, Brandon Mallory plunged the final yard for the winning score, the club’s fourth win in overtime in the last three seasons.

Reed Gurchiek rushed for 117 yards on 13 attempts with one TD and completed 10-of-13 passes for 121 yards as well. DeBoard finished with 85 yards on 20 carries and one touchdown, while senior Matt Green had a career-day in the passing game as well, catching three balls for 43 yards, including a one-yard TD from Broc Loveless.

Cumberland continues a four-game road swing this Saturday at Union College and faces No. 9 Faulkner University in Montgomery on October 18.
