The Tennessee State University women’s basketball team picked up its first win of the season after defeating Lipscomb University, 73-55, Saturday afternoon in Allen Arena.
Chelsea Hudson led TSU (1-2) and picked up her first double-double of the season with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Rachel Allen finished the game with 10 points.
Lipscomb (1-3) was led in scoring by Danay Fothergill’s 13 points.
Tennessee State grabbed the momentum in the first half and controlled the pace throughout the contest. TSU forced LU into 28 turnovers and scored 26 points off of the miscues.
Early in the game, TSU was leading 9-8 when the Lady Tigers went on a 10-0 run to go ahead, 19-8. Lipscomb responded with a rally to cut the deficit down to four points before TSU went into the halftime break with a, 28-23, lead.
The Lady Tigers outscored the Lady Bisons 11-2 to start the second stanza and extended the advantage to, 39-25, at the 11:51 mark.
Lipscomb called a timeout in an attempt to halt the TSU spurt but Chelsea Hudson found Diamond Beatty in the paint to make the score, 41-25, in favor of the visiting team.
A couple of buckets by the Lady Bisons pulled them within 11 but four consecutive points from Briana Morrow, put TSU on top, 46-31.
TSU maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the game.
TSU shot an improved 73.5 percent (25-of-34) from the free-throw line and outrebounded LU, 46-32. The Lady Tigers also held the advantage in second chance points (20-5) and points in the paint (38-18).
The Lady Tigers will play their second game in three days when they return to action against #4 Tennessee on Monday, Nov. 24. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. (ET) at Thompson-Boling Arena.
