Josh Wilkerson scored 12 points but Cumberland shot just 35 percent from the field and was only 12-of-23 at the foul line, dropping another close game, this time 59-52 to eighth-ranked Martin Methodist on Wednesday night in Pulaski, Tenn.

The Bulldogs (5-8) lost for the third time by seven points or less in the last three weeks with two of those defeats to the RedHawks (10-1), who won 66-64 at Cumberland on November 24. The contest featured 15 turnovers by each team.

Wilkerson was the only CU player in double figures, with DeMario Frazier, DeQuan Bond and Jerrod Gaston each netting eight points and Moritz Dern adding six points and 10 rebounds.

MMC took a 17-11 advantage midway through the first half thanks to five points from Josh Watson and four apiece by Reginald Porter and Jamaal Ahmad. Consecutive 3-pointers from Wilkerson and Dern knotted the game at 17 and a 9-0 spurt shortly thereafter put the Bulldogs ahead, 27-20, with just over four minutes left in the period.

Telvin Wilkerson had a bucket and then a 3-pointer before field goals by Gaston and Marquel Hickerson during the run for CU. Unfortunately Cumberland did not score the rest of the half and the RedHawks netted the final seven points of the half, the final two with four seconds remaining by Darius Forrest, knotting the game at 27.

Martin Methodist hit four consecutive 3-pointers to start the second half as part of a 12-2 spurt over the first four minutes. CU missed a pair of shots and committed two turnovers during the stretch, with MMC taking a 39-29 advantage.

The Bulldogs cut the deficit to six with a basket by Gaston and one free throw from Frazier and Hickerson. The lead went back to 10 before CU scored seven straight points midway through the second half with field goals from Josh Wilkerson and Gaston and a 3-pointer by Bond, making it 45-42 with 9:54 remaining.

Bond’s old-fashioned 3-point play with 7:46 to play pulled CU within three again, but that was as close at Cumberland would get.

Woods led four RedHawks players in double-digits with 14 points, while Burney scored 11 and Watson and Porter each finished with 10.

Cumberland plays in the Roadrunner Booster Club Classic in Dalton, Ga., this weekend, taking on 13th-ranked Dalton State College on Friday at 7 p.m . Central Time and Concordia University-Selma on Saturday at 1 p.m. before taking a break for Christmas.
