The Ohio Valley Conference announced today that Arkeem Joseph, a 6-9, 280-pound junior center on the University of Tennessee at Martin men’s basketball team, earned adidas OVC Newcomer of the Week accolades.
This marks the second straight week that a Skyhawk has been the recipient of the OVC’s Newcomer of the Week honors, as Deville Smith captured the award last week as well as Player of the Week accolades. Today’s announcement also marks just the fourth time in program history that two different UT Martin players won the OVC Newcomer of the Week accolade in back-to-back weeks and first time since Djero Riedewald and Lester Hudson were honored on Feb. 11 and Feb. 18, 2008, respectively.
Joseph is coming off the best game of his young Skyhawk career, as he established new career-highs in points (12), rebounds (seven) and minutes played (32) at Butler on Dec. 22. He sank five of his eight field goal attempts and also added a pair of free throws while blocking a shot for UT Martin. Four of his rebounds came on the offensive glass against the Big East opponent.
A transfer out of Monroe College, Joseph has started in six games this season, including each of the last four contests. He is averaging 5.7 points and 3.1 rebounds while shooting at a 49.2 percent clip (29-for-59) in 19.1 minutes per game.
The Skyhawks open a season-long four-game homestand tomorrow (Dec. 30) against Maryland-Eastern Shore. Tipoff time from the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
