Rising University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball redshirt sophomore guard Jessy Ward has been named the Ohio Valley Conference’s adidas Newcomer of the Week for the second consecutive week after a career performance this past week.
A native of Clarksville, Ward has burst onto the scene for the Skyhawks, becoming just the eighth player in school history to become a recipient of multiple Newcomer of the Week accolades and the first since current assistant coach Alecia Weatherly accomplished the feat in 2010.
No game was bigger for the newcomer than her performance against Evansville on Saturday, Nov. 29. Ward got the game started with two quick three-pointers out of the gate en route to a career best 25 point performance – including career marks with nine field goals made and seven three-pointers. Her eight points down the stretch in the final three minutes of the contest lifted the Skyhawks to the 84-74 victory.
Ward continues to lead the Skyhawks in scoring on the season, averaging 16.4 points per game while reaching double figures in all seven games of her young career – including 10 points against Samford earlier in the week.
Ward and the Skyhawks will return to action on Thursday, Dec. 4 when they travel to take on Southeastern Conference foe Alabama, a team which the Skyhawks defeated 75-57 last season.
