Mizzou rallies past Lipscomb in 2nd Half

Posted on 03 January 2015 by Allen

The Mizzou men’s basketball team (6-7) pushed past Lipscomb, 72-60, on Saturday (Jan. 3) to round out non-conference action. Sophomore Johnathan Williams III tossed in a team-high 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to record his fifth career double-double. Williams III has notched at least 15 points and eight rebounds in seven consecutive games.

The Tigers used 30 points from its bench to wear out Lipscomb with a balanced attack. Keanau Post provided a crucial spark in 14 minutes of action. The senior notched seven points and pulled down a career-high 10 rebounds. Freshman Tramaine Isabell tacked on a career-high 14 points. With Mizzou trailing by 11 in the first half, the Tigers put together a 14-5 run to close the gap before halftime. Thirteen of those 14 points came from the bench as Mizzou faced a 35-33 deficit at the break.

The Tigers turned up the pressure on the defensive end in the second half, surging into the lead with a 16-1 run. Mizzou’s trio of point guards of Isabell, Keith Shamburger and Wes Clark pushed the pace during the momentum swing. Following a deep three-pointer from Shamburger, Clark and Isabell converted back-to-back buckets in transition. An Isabell trey and a ferocious dunk from Post a few minutes later handed the Tigers their first lead since the 18:51 mark of the first half.

Coach Kim Anderson’s squad swarmed Lipscomb for the remainder of the game. The Bisons were held without a field goal for the game’s final 9:33. Lipscomb shot just 32-percent from the field, the worst by any Tiger opponent during the 2014-15 campaign. Mizzou forced 14 turnovers and the Tigers took advantage, outscoring the Bisons 18-6 over in the last nine minutes. Lipscomb missed its final 10 shots from the floor and 18 of its final 19 attempts.

Mizzou now turns to Southeastern Conference play, which begins Jan. 8 at home against LSU. Tip off is set for 6 p.m.
