Tough second half leads to first A-Sun loss for Lipscomb

Posted on 24 January 2015 by Allen

It was a tale of two halves for the Lipscomb men’s basketball team on Saturday afternoon in a 75-66 loss to Atlantic Sun Conference foe North Florida at Allen Arena.

“North Florida is a tremendous team,” said Lipscomb head coach Casey Alexander. “They have so much offensive fire power. They got off to a good start in the second half and from there they played with so much confidence and we were a little bit on our heels.”

In the battle of the two league unbeatens, the Bisons (10-10, 4-1 A-Sun) held the Ospreys to (13-9, 5-0 A-Sun) to just 21 points in the opening half before North Florida roared back with a 56-point stanza to close the game.

“The first 20 minutes are easily the best 20 minutes we’ve played all year on both ends of the floor in my opinion,” said Alexander. “It wasn’t pretty and our offensive numbers weren’t very good but I was really proud of our guys for their mentality for that whole 20 minutes. We made very few mistakes in the first half.”

Lipscomb held a 29-19 advantage at the break before UNF quickly erased the deficit and took the lead less than four minutes into the half. The majority of the damage in the second half came from UNF’s Beau Beech, who led the game with 27 points including 24 points in the final 20 minutes behind 6-of-8 shooting from beyond the arc.

“Nobody is happy about the result by any stretch but this loss is better than several of the wins we had,” said Alexander. ‘That’s how we need to measure ourselves by how we play. “

The Ospreys would eventually jump out to a 13-point advantage but the Bisons would chip away and get the lead down to just four with 40 seconds remaining but could not get a miss at the charity stripe from UNF.

The Bisons were led in scoring by sophomore guard Josh Williams, who finished with 18 points on the afternoon.

“Josh is playing so hard,” said Alexander. “He wants the ball. He wants to be the guy and deliver. That’s a great mentality to have and he continues to do so. “

He was joined in double figures by senior forward Malcom Smith, who scored 13 and sophomore guard J.C. Hampton and junior forward Talbott Denny, who each added 12 and 11, respectively.

The Bisons hit the road to the “Sunshine State” for a pair of A-Sun contests at FGCU and Stetson. Both games will be carried live on ESPN3. Saturday’s game at Stetson will also air on 94.9 Game 2 in the Nashville market.
