Josh Wilkerson netted five of his game-high 17 points during a 10-1 run in the second half and Alex Flagler made two 3-pointers and finished with 16 points in Cumberland’s 69-53 victory over Indiana University-Southeast on Saturday in New Albany, Ind., ending a five-game losing streak for the Bulldogs.

Wilkerson made a field goal and then a 3-pointer and Paul Williams added four points during the run, which game CU (6-10) a 46-34 advantage with 11:05 remaining. The Grenadiers (3-9) answered with a 7-0 spurt to pull within five, but DeQuan Bond’s bucket ended the spurt and Flagler nailed a 3-pointer the next time down the court, stretching the lead back to 10 for Cumberland.

The Bulldogs still led by eight with 5:43 remaining before ending the contest on a 12-4 run, with Wilkerson scoring four points and DeMario Frazier adding an old-fashioned 3-point play.

Williams recorded 10 points and six rebounds and Flagler posted five steals and three assists in the win for CU.

Parker Henes led IUS with 15 points and Jake Simpson finished with 14, but the Grenadiers shot just 31 percent from the field, including 2-for-19 from 3-point range.

The Bulldogs started the game quickly, taking an 11-4 advantage seven minutes into the contest behind four points from Flagler and an old-fashioned 3-point play by Uros Benacek. CU extended the lead to nine on Flagler’s trifecta with 6:24 left in the half and led 21-12 after Williams’ bucket just a minute later.

IUS put together a 13-2 spurt before the end of the period to take its first lead of the contest, with Joe Jackson netting four points and Kayman Garrett adding five with a 3-pointer. Wilkerson hit two free throws to tie the game at 25 and Moritz Dern hit two more with 50 seconds to play before the break to give CU a 27-25 edge at intermission.

Cumberland plays again January 12 at Freed-Hardeman before returning to Mid-South Conference action Jan. 15 at the University of the Cumberlands and Jan. 17 at the University of Pikeville.
