WKU Faces Marshall in First League Game as Member of Conference USA on Sunday

WKU begins a new season and a new journey on Sunday afternoon as the Lady Toppers travel to Marshall to face the Thundering Herd in WKU’s first league game as a member of Conference USA. Tipoff is set for noon CT at the Cam Henderson Center in Huntington, W. Va.

The game will be available online on the C-USA Digital Network. Fans can subscribe to the C-USA Digital Network through Conference USA’s website, which provides access to live and on-demand video content from every Conference USA school, including WKU. Audio will be live streamed on with Barry Williams (play-by-play) on the call. The game can also be heard live on ESPN 102.7 FM and 1450 AM in the Bowling Green area and worldwide via the TuneIn app.

WKU made the transition to Conference USA on July 1, 2014 with the Lady Toppers making an immediate splash in the league during the non-conference season with a league-best 11 non-conference wins with senior Chastity Gooch earning three conference Player of the Week honors before Jan. 1, a league first.

Conference USA is one of the premier women’s basketball leagues in the nation. The current alignement of the league has combined for over 9,200 wins, 113 NCAA Tournament appearances, 19 Final Four appearances, 11 national championship game appearances and four national championships. The current crop of coaches in the league hold over 3,000 career wins.

The Lady Toppers enter league play with an 11-2 record following non-conference play, ranked 24th in the RPI (as of Friday, Dec. 2, 2015) and are receiving votes in both the Associated Press and USA Today Coaches Poll.

Gooch, the senior All-American candidate, is averaging a team high 18.5 points and 7.7 rebounds per game. She is shooting 55.0 percent from the field. The three-time league player of the week has had two of her better outings of the season in WKU’s last three games. She posted a career best 32 points on Dec. 16 at Austin Peay, including 24 points in the first half. She had 24 points and seven steals in WKU’s last outing at Belmont on Dec. 29, 2014.

During WKU’s current eight-game winning streak, senior Alexis Govan has returned to the form that made her one of the nation’s top scorers in 2012-13. She averaged 19.2 points during the month of December and shot 69.1 percent from the field. Govan had 17 points against Belmont in WKU’s last outing and has scored at least 17 points in six straight games and 15 or more points in 10 straight games.

Following the trip to Huntington, W. Va., WKU plays at Charlotte on Jan. 8 and Old Dominion on Jan. 10 before returning home on Jan. 15 against Florida Atlantic for the annual Spread the Red Education Game at 11:00 a.m. CT.
