The Tennessee State University men’s basketball team dropped a 69-41game to Eastern Kentucky University at the Gentry Center on Saturday night.

The Tigers (5-21, 2-9 OVC) never led in the game. The Colonels (15-9, 7-4 OVC) made the first basket of the game 1:49 in. TSU tied it up seconds later, the only time in the game that happened, but a trey by Ja’Mill Powell gave EKU a lead it would never give up.

The Colonels now hold a 30-25 series advantage.

Christian Mekowulu led all scorers with 16 points (5-for-6) while Jay Harris scored 10 (4-for-10).

After scoring over 20 for his last three games, Eric Stutz led EKU in scoring with 15 points (5-for-10).

The first half started out all EKU. They employed a trap defense that forced eight turnovers by TSU through the first eight minutes of the game. The Tigers trailed 18-5 heading into the second media timeout.

The Tigers came back over the next eight minutes, going on a 14-4 run to pull within three points. The Colonels ended the half on a run of their own, heading into the locker room with a 26-19 lead.

TSU cut back on the turnovers for the final 12 minutes of the half, but still ended the first 20 minutes having committed 12 turnovers.

90 seconds into the second half, the Colonels scored seven straight points putting the Tigers down 14 before they could blink an eye. TSU tried to stab at the lead, but unlike last Saturday in Richmond, EKU maintained a healthy advantage on the scoreboard, ranging from 10 to 14 points.

The Colonels kept the pedal to the floor, extending their lead to its largest at 19 with 8:08 to play. The Tigers’ offensive woes continued as they proceeded to shoot XX percent for the final 20 minutes of the game.

With only four games left on the slate, TSU will host Morehead State next Thursday night at the Gentry Center. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m.

With the win, EKU stays in first place in the OVC East Division. The Colonels are a half game ahead of Belmont with four games to play in the regular season.

The Colonels will be back in action Tuesday against Austin Peay in McBrayer Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
