With a start as cold as the winter storm that is bearing down on the southeast, the Lipscomb men’s basketball team dug a hole it could not dig out of falling 70-47 to Atlantic Sun Conference foe USC Upstate at the G.B. Hodge Center.

The Bisons opened the contest by missing the first seven attempts from the field and would go on to hit only two of the first 17 attempts from the floor. The Purple and Gold would claw back from an 11-point deficit to trail 32-26 at the half.

“I don’t think there was ever a point in the game where we were in control, where we played with confidence or played with the mentality that this game had a real significance,” said Lipscomb head coach Casey Alexander. “Upstate kept us in it in the first half and gave us hope and momentum but we didn’t capitalize”

The lid never would come off the basket for the Bisons in the second half either as Lipscomb shot 21.2 percent in the final 20 minutes of action.

“We some guys player harder than others and some guys wanted it more than others but we didn’t have anybody that played the way that we needed them to play,” said Alexander. “I take the blame for that for sure because it’s my job to have them ready and to have them execute better. Until we do that, we’re going to get the same result.”

Sophomore guard Josh Williams led Lipscomb with a 15-point, five rebound effort. Center Chad Lang fresh off his first career double-double nearly completed the feat again with an 8-point, 9-rebound night.

Upstate’s Ty Greene led all scorers with a 25-point effort hitting 8-of-16 from the floor including 5-of-6 from beyond the arc.

The Bisons return home on Saturday morning to wrap up the 2014-15 regular season hosting Kennesaw State for “Senior Day” at Allen Arena. The game tipsoff at 10 a.m. and will air on ESPN3 and the WatchESPN app.
