Carter Smith, a senior left-handed pitcher on the University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team, was named the season’s first adidas Ohio Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week this afternoon.
Today’s announcement marks the second career OVC weekly honor for Smith, both of which have occurred in the last three weeks dating back to last season.
Smith drew the starting assignment for UT Martin’s Opening Day contest against Texas-Pan American last Friday, earning the win in the Skyhawks’ 1-0 victory. The 6-2, 205-pound native of St. Louis, Mo. kept the Broncs off balance, allowing only one hit while striking out eight batters over five shutout innings. He helped UT Martin post just its second shutout in the last 96 games and the result also resulted in head coach Rick Robinson’s 700th career victory.
Smith fanned at least one batter in each of his five innings of work and retired the final seven batters he faced, four of which came via strikeout. Overall, he limited Texas-Pan American to a .067 batting average (one hit in 15 at-bats).
Weather permitting, the Skyhawks are scheduled to hold their home-opener this weekend when they host Western Michigan. The two squads will play at 3 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 20, a noon doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 21 and a noon single game on Sunday, Feb. 22.
