The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team fell behind early and could not recover this afternoon, dropping a 16-5 decision at Southeast Missouri.

UT Martin (4-14, 2-5 Ohio Valley Conference) trailed 8-0 after three innings of play before chipping away with two runs in the top of the fourth. However, the Redhawks (11-9, 5-2 OVC) ended the game with eight unanswered runs.

Nick Gavello had a pair of hits and scored a run for the Skyhawks, while Taylor Douglas also added two hits. Matt Hirsch had a pair of RBI’s and Mike Murphy also tallied a hit for UT Martin.

On the mound, Daniel Shaw (0-2) was credited with the loss after starting the game and pitching 2.1 innings. He was followed by four Skyhawk relievers who combined to allow six hits over 5.2 innings of work.

Southeast Missouri scored three runs in the bottom of the first but it appeared that UT Martin may immediately answer back in the second. Murphy (single), Gavello (single) and Hirsch (walk) all reached with two outs to load the bases but would later be stranded.

The Redhawks added two more runs in the second inning and three runs in the third before the Skyhawks got on the scoreboard. Hirsch came up with a clutch two-run single up the middle to plate Murphy (reached on fielder’s choice) and Gavello (reached on double), making the score 8-2.

However, Southeast Missouri was able to score on run in the fourth before Gary Price shut down the Redhawks in the fifth inning. Southeast Missouri tacked on five runs in the sixth but Dillon Symon kept the Redhawks off the scoreboard by retiring the side in order in the seventh. Southeast Missouri then scored twice in the eighth to conclude the game’s scoring.

Game 2 of this three-game set is scheduled for Saturday, March 21 at 2 p.m. Carter Smith (1-2, 0.35 ERA) will likely get the starting nod on the mound for UT Martin while Joey Lucchesi (2-0, 7.02 ERA) is listed as Southeast Missouri’s probable starting pitcher.
