Cumberland women’s basketball was one of 32 qualifiers announced Wednesday to take part in the 35th Annual NAIA Championships scheduled for March 18-24 in Independence, Mo. The Bulldogs will learn their opponent, date and time for opening round games tonight at 7 p.m. Central Time at www.naia.org.

Cumberland, 16-12 overall and 8-6 in the Mid-South Conference, finished the season with a 4-7 mark against ranked opponents, including a pair of victories against Lindsey Wilson and one win at Georgetown College. Three of the club’s seven losses have come against Top-5 ranked Campbellsville University by a combined 21 points, including a 69-66 double overtime thriller in Lebanon in December.

The Bulldogs won their last two regular season contests and then posted a 69-66 victory over 22nd-ranked University of Pikeville before falling in Campbellsville in the semifinals of the Mid-South Conference Championships.

This marks the sixth time Cumberland has reached the NAIA Championships and second under sixth-year head coach Jeremy Lewis, who led the club to a Fab Four finish two years ago. The Bulldogs also lost in the national championship game in 2007 and played in the national tournament in 1999, 2005 and 2006.
