The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team tallied four solo home runs against Eastern Kentucky in an Ohio Valley Conference doubleheader on Saturday, but the home runs would not enough as the Skyhawks dropped the twinbill to the Colonels, 4-1 and 6-3.

The Skyhawks (23-20, 9-9 OVC) were led offensively by the standout day of senior Kenzi Tate who tallied a pair of solo home runs on the day. Tate was joined in the long ball circuit by sophomore Carly Gonzales and senior Lauren Smith who both tallied solo blasts in Game 2.

The sophomore duo of Elizabeth Wiegand and Brooke Kennedy both earned a pair of starts, combining to allow 10 earned runs on the day, despite pitching complete games. Kennedy earned a start in Game 1, allowing four earned runs in seven innings of work despite striking out seven and allowing just one walk. Wiegand finished her 14th complete game after allowing six runs along with four strikeouts on the day.

Game 1: Eastern Kentucky 4, UT Martin 1

The Colonels attempted to get on the board early in the game, striking for a two run home run off the bat of Katie Tackett on just the fourth at bat of the game.

Down but not out, the Skyhawks would get on the board in the bottom of the first. Following back-to-back fly outs to left, Tate would knock a solo home run into the right center field gap to trim the lead in half, trailing 2-1.

The Colonels would get some separation in the second inning after tallying one run in the second inning before both teams went scoreless for the next four innings. EKU would put the game out of reach in the top of the seventh inning. Sarah Fobbs would double to right center before later scoring the game’s final run off Tackett’s third RBI of the game, this one off an infield single.

Game 2: Eastern Kentucky 6, UT Martin 3

Eastern Kentucky would strike in the first for the second consecutive game, scoring the game’s eventual game-winning run. With runners on second and third with just one out, Tackett would keep with the day’s theme, depositing a two run single into the left center gap. Shannon McQueen would tally the team’s other big hit in the inning, poking a two run single of her own through the left side to take an early 4-0 advantage.

The Skyhawks will get on the board in the bottom of the second inning, bringing the game to a 4-1 margin following a solo home run from Smith, her eighth of the season.

The home squad would strike again in the bottom of the third inning with the day’s third solo home run, this time off the bat of Gonzales. The home run marked the seventh of Gonzales’ season, marking her eighth career blast.

With the margin cut in half, EKU would strike again in the top of the fourth inning. McQueen would get the inning started with a double to right center. McQueen would then come around to score just two batters later following an RBI single from Kayla Joyce.

A solo home run, this one off the bat of Eastern Kentucky’s Krislyn Campos into the left center power gap, would give the Colonels a 6-2 advantage.

With the home squad down to their final three outs, the Colonels would retire the first two batters of the inning, setting up Tate with the game’s potential final out. Tate would notch her second home run of the day, this one a home run to right center would serve as the team’s final scoring output.

UT Martin will return to action, looking to pick up two games in the OVC standings with a doubleheader against Morehead State on Sunday, April 19. Action from Bettye Giles Field is scheduled to get underway at 1 p.m.
