Redshirt freshman quarterback Nick Fitzgerald threw for 255 yards and accounted for three touchdowns to lead White to a 28-24 come-from-behind victory over Maroon in the annual Mississippi State Maroon and White Spring Game on Saturday afternoon in Davis Wade Stadium.

A crowd of 21,500 turned out and prior to the game witnessed mascot Bully XXI make his debut. Honorary White team head coach Ben Howland of the men’s basketball program recorded his first win in Starkville.

“I think we had a great crowd here today,” said head coach Dan Mullen. “That is what is so important to us, putting players in a game situation and seeing how they handle it. This is a different type of pressure, and it is good to have those guys experience that.”

Fitzgerald, a talented 6-foot-5 signal caller, completed 20-of-30 passes and accounted for the game’s first score when he scampered seven yards in for a touchdown with 7:43 remaining in the first quarter. Fitzgerald’s 24-yard touchdown strike to sophomore Donald Gray with 5:41 left proved to be the game winner.

Senior quarterback Dak Prescott played the entire first half and finished 20-of-29 for 231 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions.

“Everything was good overall, and I feel like everyone got better,” said Prescott. “I led the other guys, but I also made sure they led. I really feel like we are in the right position we need to be in at this point.”

Redshirt freshman Dontavian Lee was the day’s leading rusher with 53 yards on 11 carries to go along with a 5-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter that tied the game at 14 all. Junior De’Runnya Wilson led all receivers with 92 yards on five catches. The familiar tandem of Prescott-to-Wilson connected on a 17-yard touchdown that culminated a 14-play drive with 5:22 on the clock in the first quarter.

White trailed 24-21 heading into the locker room until Gray provided the second half’s only score midway through the third quarter.

Maroon twice in the final minutes of the fourth quarter had a chance to pull ahead but two redzone turnovers proved to be costly. Deondre Fair fumbled at the White 12, which was recovered by Quadry Antoine. After forcing a White three-and-out, scout team quarterback Nate Gieb found Kareem Vance for a 48-yard strike down to the White 19. However, Kelan Chairs intercepted a pass inside the 2-yard line to secure the White victory.

Sophomore J.T. Gray led all tacklers with nine, while Kivon Coman tallied eight.

The Bulldogs now turn their attention to a rigorous offseason program leading up to the start of August pre-season camp.

“The biggest thing to me is that no one put themselves out of position,” said Mullen. “No one has earned a spot yet, but we have a long training camp to go where guys can continue to learn and improve. I think we are a young unit, and I think the guys have the intensity and the work ethic they need to be successful.”
