Cumberland seniors Tyler Alford and Justin Byrd were voted First Team All-Mid-South Conference and Ryan Dickison and Stevie Smith both earned Second Team honors, as announced by the league office during the conference tournament last week in Bowling Green, Ky. In addition, Alford was named the Champions of Character Award winner for baseball.

Byrd led the Bulldogs with a .341 batting average and also paced the club with 16 doubles, 26 walks, 18 stolen bases and 60 hits. The Rockwall, Texas, native ranked second with seven home runs, 39 RBIs, 43 runs scored and three triples and posted 14 multi-hit outings, including one of two four-hit games for the Bulldogs this season, March 31 vs. Tennessee Wesleyan.

Byrd also ranked second on the squad with 11 multi-RBI outings and batted .358 with six doubles, five homers, 22 RBIs and 22 runs scored in 24 games versus Mid-South Conference opponents.

Alford enjoyed the best offensive season of his career, batting .331 with 11 doubles, two home runs and 24 RBIs in 50 contests. The Knoxville, Tenn., native led the Bulldogs with 20 multi-hit outings and also had seven multi-RBI games as well. He batted .341 with six doubles and eight RBIs versus Mid-South opponents.

Dickison finished the year with a .306 average along with 13 doubles, team-leading eight homers and 40 RBIs as well as 24 run scored in 51 games. The Garden Grove, Calif., native registered 16 multi-hit and a team-best 13 multi-RBI contests during the year and batted .337 with six doubles, six home runs and 23 RBIs against Mid-South foes.

Smith’s numbers do not tell the whole story about how well he pitched for most of the year. The senior righthander finished the season 5-3 overall with a 2.47 earned-run-average in 91.0 innings, making 13 starts with three complete games. The Murfreesboro, Tenn., native allowed just 61 hits and struck out 84, with opponents batting just 1.96 against him.

Smith worked at least six innings in his last 11 starts and gave up two or fewer earned runs in 10 outings. He allowed 27 total runs in his 13 starts but got no decisions when his team was either tied or ahead when he left the game in four contests.
