Sepulveda ends season ranked 29th in singles

Cumberland junior Angelica Sepulveda ended the season ranked 29th nationally in singles in the final Oracle/ITA National NAIA Rankings of the 2014-15 season published Thursday, unveiling the top 50 national singles players and top 25 national doubles teams in NAIA men’s and women’s tennis.

The Bucaramanga, Colombia, native finished the 2014-15 academic year 13-10 overall in singles, including 9-9 in dual matches, with victories over Lindsey Wilson’s Alicia Rodriguez and Northwestern Ohio’s Melena Lopez. She was 16-7 overall in doubles, including 10-3 with Alena Gizdić and 6-3 with Tarsha de Souza.

Sepulveda was named a Second Team NAIA All-American two weeks ago and was also a Second Team All-America selection as a freshman in 2013 for the Bulldogs.

Cumberland’s Antonio Manuel Marcelo and Alena Gizdić were named the Mid-South Conference Men’s and Women’s Tennis Players of the Week, respectively, on Tuesday, as announced by the league office.

Gizdić won all six of her matches at the AUM Spring Invitational, helping the Bulldogs to a 3-0 mark in the event. She posted straight-set victories in all three singles outings at No. 2, defeating Belhaven University’s Katherine Campbell (6-0, 6-2), Coastal Georgia’s Sunshine Beba (6-2, 7-5) and Martin Methodist’s Viktoria Ryjak (6-2, 6-0).

In doubles Gizdić and Antea Dedić recorded three doubles wins at No. 1, including 8-1 over Belhaven’s Stephanie Smith and Elizabeth Chrestman, 8-3 versus Coastal Georgia’s Priri Rijal and Nicole Faas and 8-1 against Martin Methodist’s Maria Charrys and Callie Thomas. Gizdić is now 4-0 this spring in dual match singles and 3-1 in doubles.

Marcelo registered four victories in CU’s two matches at the AUM Spring Invitational, defeating Belhaven’s Andre Borghi, 7-5, 6-4, and Xavier’s 39th-ranked Kyle Montrel, 4-6, 6-3, 10-4, at No. 1 singles. Marcelo and Diogo Soares collected 9-8 wins in doubles at No. 1 over Belhaven’s Nikita Lisov and Jefferson Nino and Xavier’s Montrel and JNikita Soifer. He is now 3-1 this spring in singles and 2-2 in doubles.

Cumberland plays at Embry-Riddle this afternoon, with the Eagles men ranked No. 1 nationally versus the seventh-ranked Bulldogs and ERAU’s No. 7 women battling 18th-ranked Cumberland.

Bulldogs fall in season opener at Belmont

Alena Gizdić posted a three-set victory in a super tiebreaker at No. 2 singles and Angelica Sepulveda and Franki Jecker won their doubles match, but Cumberland dropped a 6-1 decision to Belmont University on Friday in women’s tennis action at Centennial Sportsplex in Nashville, Tenn.

The Bulldogs (0-1) played with just five players, forfeiting the No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles matches to the Bruins (2-3) and essentially giving the home team two points in the match.

Sepulveda and Jecker won 6-0 over Nikki Maciel and Abbie Mather for CU, but Belmont’s Laura Van Eeckhoudt and Kendall Warren recorded a 6-2 win at No. 1 against Gizdić and Antea Dedić.

In singles Van Eeckhoudt defeated Sepulveda, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 1, but Gizdić registered a 6-2, 4-6, 10-8 victory over Warren at No. 2. Maciel posted a 6-3, 6-4, triumph versus Dedić at No. 3, while Mather collected a 6-1, 6-1, win at No. 4 against Jecker and Ann Lauren Fiepke defeated Tais Lacerda Bezerra at No. 5, 6-1, 6-0.

Cumberland next competes at the AUM Spring Invitational on March 6-8 in Montgomery, Ala.

Final match decides Cumberland men’s tennis opener

Garry Tokas lost in a super tiebreaker at No. 6 singles in the final match on the court, as 10th-ranked Cumberland dropped a 4-3 decision to Eastern Kentucky indoors on Saturday in the season opener for the Bulldogs in Richmond, Ky.

Cumberland dropped 2-of-3 doubles outings to fall behind early in the match, but singles victories by Pablo Borrero and 21st-ranked Antonio Manual Marcelo tied the match at two. A singles win from Diogo Soares knotted the score at three, leaving Tokas as the final match. Alberto Tintoré defeated the freshman, 6-4, 6-5 (5), at No. 6, preserving the victory for the Colonels.

Alex Alvaro and Juanjo de la Llera posted an 8-3 doubles win over Borrero and Marcelo at No. 1 and Daridge Saidi and Joao Maio won by the same score against Andres Burgos and Pedro Rodrigues at No. 2. Soares and Tokas claimed an 8-7 (6) victory at No. 3 versus Tintoré and Diego Asis.

Borrero was first off in singles, defeated Asis, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 3, but Florian Graskamp put EKU back ahead with a 6-1, 6-0, win at No. 4 over Burgos. Marcelo’s victory evened the score again with a 6-4, 6-3, victory at No. 1 against Alvaro, but the Colonels took a 3-2 edge when Saidi outlasted Rodrigues at No. 2, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4. Soares registered a 6-1, 6-0, win at No. 5 versus Maio, knotting the match at three before the Tintoré-Tokas outing decided the outcome.

Cumberland plays again this Sunday at Belmont University before participating in the Auburn Montgomery Spring Invitational on March 6-8 in Montgomery, Ala.
