MTSU falls 4-1 to No. 22 Boise State

The Middle Tennessee men’s tennis team fell to No. 22 Boise State 4-1 Saturday night at the Appleton Tennis Center. In the defeat, the Blue Raiders fall to 8-12 on the spring.

Boise State took the two completed doubles matches for the doubles point before winning three of the four singles matches that were finished.

Sophomore David Fox picked up the Blue Raiders’ lone victory at No. 2 singles, defeating Boise State’s Nathan Sereke (6-4, 3-6, 6-0.)

The Blue Raiders will have a quick turnaround, facing Utah State in a neutral-site match in Boise Sunday at noon CT.

The Middle Tennessee men’s tennis team downed Austin Peay, 5-2, on Thursday afternoon at Buck Bouldin Tennis Center. In the win, the Blue Raiders improve to 5-10 on the spring.

The Blue Raiders opened the afternoon by capturing the doubles point, taking the only two completed matches. Sophomore David Fox teamed up with freshman Sam Matheson for an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles, while juniors Victor Hoang and Ettore Zito captured an 8-3 victory at No. 3.

MT took four of six singles matches, with all four coming in straight sets. Zito won at No. 1 (6-2, 6-2), Fox at No. 2 (6-0, 7-5), freshman Aaron Jumonville at No. 4 (6-2, 6-0), and junior Yannick Born at No. 6 (6-4, 6-2).

The Blue Raiders return to action Monday with a match at Louisville at 1 p.m.

Women’s Tennis drops 4-3 heartbreaker to BU

Middle Tennessee women’s tennis dropped a 4-3 decision to Boston University at a neutral site matchup at Barry University on Monday morning.

The Blue Raiders (6-4) dropped a doubles decision. However, MT rebounded with three wins from singles action, just one shy of claiming the match.

In doubles, Boston’s Madison Craft/Kim McCallum defeated Sarah Sediri/Flavia Nagayma 8-1. The Terriers tandem of Leonie-Charlotte Athanasiadis and Johanna Hyoty won 8-5 over MT’s Nayara Moraes/Irina Constantinide at the second court. The first court of Tiffany William and Jesse Grace did not finish.

In singles action, McCallum lifted the Terriers to a 2-0 lead with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Sediri. Lauren Davis defeated the Raiders’ Grace, 6-1, 6-3, to give BU a comfortable cushion.

From there, Middle Tennessee bounced back with a fifth court win from Constantinide over Sami Lieb (6-3, 6-2). The victory was the fourth straight for Constantinide. At the third court, the junior Moraes snatched a 6-3, 7-5 decision over Athanasiadis. In the No. 1 match of the day, Hyoty gave William her first loss of the year 7-6 (4), 6-3. William is now 9-1 on the season. MT closed out the match with a Nagayama win over Barbara Rodriguez, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2.

The Blue Raiders continue their South Florida swing with a visit to unbeaten Barry University on Wednesday. First serve is set for 2 p.m. CT.

MTSU Men’s Tennis splits Sunday matches

The No. 56 Middle Tennessee men’s tennis team split a pair of matches on Sunday, falling to No. 30 Northwestern in the morning, 4-3, before shutting out Tennessee State in the nightcap, 7-0. The Blue Raiders move to 2-6 in dual matches following Sunday’s results.

No. 84 sophomore David Fox, along with junior Victor Hoang, picked up two wins in singles play on the day. Juniors Ettore Zito and Yannick Born, along with freshmen Sam Matheson and Aaron Jumonville, each picked up a singles win in the evening match against Tennessee State.

The Blue Raiders picked up the doubles point in both matches, with the No. 57 tandem of Fox and sophomore Victor Cornea capturing their one doubles match of the day against the Wildcats. Born and Jumonville won a doubles match against both Northwestern and Tennessee State, while Hoang and Zito won against the Tigers.

The Blue Raiders return to action on Friday, Feb. 28 with the first of two matches against New York’s Ivy League universities. MT will face Cornell in Ithaca, N.Y., before facing Columbia in New York, N.Y. on March 2.
