Former UFC heavyweight champ Brock Lesnar announced today that he is retiring from MMA and has signed a new deal with the WWE. Lesnar is set to defend his WWE title at Wrestlemania 31 on Sunday in Los Angeles against Roman Reigns.

According to Lesnar,

“I’m here to say my legacy in the octagon is over. However, my legacy this Sunday at WrestleMania will not be my last. It will not be my last. I’m hanging up all thought – I want it to be out of my mouth and I want people to hear me. It was a hard decision to make. It took me a year. I thought about this for a year.

“At the end of the day, it’s all about me wanting to have fun. The money is great, but the lifestyle, for me to get back in the octagon … the last two, two and a half months I’ve been training. I’ve been training to get back in the octagon and felt physically great, but something lacked mentally. And that’s not good.”

The former UFC heavyweight champ battled diverticulitis while he was fighting in the octagon. After defeating Randy Couture for the belt Lesnar held the title for a year and a halfd with wins over Frank Mir and Shane Carwin. However his illness took it’s toll as Lesnar dropped two in a row to Cain Velasquez and Alistair Overeem before going back to the WWE in 2012.

With Lensar announcement you have to wonder if the WWE might change their plans to put the belt on Reigns and leave it on “The Beast Incarnate”.

Lesnar’s contract negotiations were public knowledge and many WWE fans thought that he was going to jump to the UFC and it was a forgone conclusion that Reigns would leave L.A. as the new champ. Now that Lesnar is locked up long term Vince McMahon could decide to leave the belt on Lesnar for a while.

I guess we will have to see how it shakes out Sunday night.
