Auburn made waves in the SEC today by hiring former Florida coach Will Muschamp to be their defensive coordinator. It was thought that Muschamp would wind up at South Carolina with Steve Spurrier but the Tigers swooped in and got the former Gators coach to lead their defense.
Muscham was a GA at Auburn and was also their defensive coordinator in 2006 and 2007 before going to Texas in 2008.
It turns out that Malzahn and Muchamp are fairly close and the two talked about their relationship today at the press conference.
According to Muschamp,
“I got to know him at the meeting we have every year down at Destin, and I’m just very impressed with him. I’ve faced him several times, and he’s a guy I’ve got a lot of respect for on the offensive side of the ball and the job that he does, so I’m looking forward to it. I really am. We’ve talked philosophically a lot about things and how you do things and how you practice and those sorts of things. We’re in line in all of those situations, so I’m looking forward to it.”
“It didn’t take long. After I decided to make a change, my goal was to go out there and get the best defensive coordinator in the country. Also, I wanted a class guy, a true professional. Will fit all of that. He was the first guy that I contacted. He’s the guy I wanted and we are blessed to have him here at Auburn.”
“First of all, he’s a great coach. He’s got a proven track record. I love his energy. I’m an energy guy, too, and I wanted somebody that had great energy and intensity to have that defense take on his personality. He’s one of the best in the business, if not the best, so we got all the above in what we were looking for.”
With Malzhan leading the team’s direction on offense and Muschamp’s mind for defense Auburn could be a frontrunner for the SEC West next year.
