Locker bruises thumb in loss to Browns

Posted on 06 October 2014 by Allen

Jake Locker is hurt, again. The Titans starting QB is once again injured after hitting his thumb on Browns cornerback Buster Skrine’s helmet in the second quarter yesterday at LP Field.

Locker left the game in the second quarter and didn’t return to the game. He came back to the sidelines after halftime with tape around his thumb. Titans’ doctors performed and x-ray and found it wasn’t broken. Coach Whinsenhunt mentioned that Locker had a bruised thumb in the press conference this afternoon and would know more later this week.

Before Locker left the game he was 8 of 11 passing for 79 yards and a touchdown. Charlie Whitehurst came in for relief and led the team to a 28-10 halftime led which they would eventually squander. Locker has passed for 764 yards with 4 touchdowns and 4 interceptions so far in 2014.

The Titans picked Locker with the 8th pick in the 2011 NFL Draft out of Washington. Besides his rookie year he has yet to be healthy for an entire season. Last year Locker’s season ended in week 10 against the Jaguars when he injured his right foot.

With the teams sitting at 1-4 fans are getting impatient and many are frustrated at the durability of Locker. It’s frustrating since he has shown flashes of being a really quarterback. In the first game this season Locker threw for 266 yards and 2 touchdowns in a win on the road in Kansas City. Unfortunately in week he injured his wrist and didn’t play against the Colts the following week. He returned this week before leaving in the second quarter after injuring his thumb.

Tennessee did not pick up the option in his contract for 2015 and this will likely be his last year in Nashvilleis a make or break year for Locker. Management has soured on him since he cannot stay healthy. Unless Locker returns and the Titans make some miracle run to the playoffs this will likely be his last year as a Titan.

Whitehurts will be the starter if Locker can’t go next week against Jacksonville. Rookie Zach Mettengerger will be the backup.
