Uros Benacek scored a career-best 15 points, but sixth-ranked Campbellsville University used a 16-2 run to start the second half and D’Von Campbell netted 26 points, 21 in the second half, and ran away from Cumberland, 70-50, in men’s basketball action here Saturday at the Powell Athletic Center.

The Bulldogs (8-17, 3-9 Mid-South) led by three at the half after scoring after a 19-8 run to end the period. Benacek hit a pair of 3-pointers and scored 11 points in the opening 20 minutes, but the Tigers outscored the visitors, 46-23, after the break, with Campbell doing the bulk of the damage.

Cumberland netted just two field goals in the first seven minutes of the second half, both from Telvin Wilkerson, who finished with 11 points and was the only other Bulldog in double figures. Campbell hit a 3-pointer and Damontre Harris added a 3-point play for the Tigers before a tip-in by Elliott Young gave the home team a 36-29 advantage.

Harris’ turn-around in the lane made it 40-29 Campbellsville, starting a 19-point stretch where Harris and Campbell posted all of the points. Campbell registered 13 points during the stretch and added eight rebounds and five assists.

Young added two more trifectas with the Bulldogs trailing by just nine with just under five minutes to play and Harris’ 3-point play with 3:17 remaining all but sealed the victory for the Tigers.

Harris posted 14 points and 10 boards and Young his four 3-pointers and scored 14 points.

Young nailed 3-pointers for the first buckets of the game and a quick 6-0 Tigers lead, but a long jumper from Telvin Wilkerson and the first trifecta of the half for Benacek cut the deficit 7-6 five minutes into the contest.

Buckets from Rob Robinson and Eric Gaines as well as a 3-point play by Campbell put Campbellsville ahead, 14-6, and the Bulldogs still trailed by eight after two free throws from Campbell. Two driving layups by Josh Wilkerson cut the deficit to four and Telvin Wilkerson added a runner before Benacek netted eight straight points for CU.

The sophomore hit his second 3-pointer of the period as well as a long jumper from near the corner and then a putback. He connected on 1-of-2 free throws, tying the game at 22. Marquel Hickerson’s short jumper knotted the score at 24 and the sophomore made three foul shots in the final 39.0 seconds, giving CU a 27-24 edge at intermission.

Benacek finished with 11 points in the half on 3-of-6 shooting while Josh Wilkerson posted six points and Hickerson and Telvin Wilkerson each had five.

Cumberland returns home next week for contests against Shawnee State on Thursday at 6 p.m. and Georgetown College on Saturday at 2 p.m. The athletic department will be accepting donations for laundry supplies for the Next Step Resource Center in Lebanon on Thursday and Saturday is Senior Day for the Bulldogs.
