Fabricio Werdum came into UFC 188 in Mexico City a pretty big underdog to champ Cain Velasquez. But after busting Velasquez up in the second round Werdum submitted him in the third to become the undisputed UFC heavyweight champion.
At -340 Werdum was not given a lot of respect by Las Vegas but he dominated the standup and finished the former champ with a guillotine.
Werdum may face Junior Dos Santos next. “Cigano” knocked out Werdum in his UFC debut back in 2008. Stipe Miocic could also be in the mix as well.
Velasquez will have to go back to the drawing board but if he can win one or two fights he would likely earn a rematch with Werdum if he can hold onto the belt. The worst case scenario would be for Dos Santos to become the champ. Velasquez has faced him three times already and the UFC probably wouldn’t put him in a fourth fight unless both men had cleaned out the division.
